Banff Mountain Film Festival - World Tour

A person I work with had a couple extra tickets to the Banff Mountain Film Festival up in Portland, and Wendy and I decided to go with them tonight. The venue was at the "Bagdad Theatre & Pub" an old renovated theatre in southeast Portland. They screened about 6 different independent short films on extreme sports. One on "Daughters of Everest" (Sherpa women) who were the first women ever to summit Mount Everest, one on Kyaking (more like riding a kyak over huge waterfalls!), one on a group attempting to paraglide across the Andes (into Argentina).

Psicobloc (about free climbing with the ocean as their "fall pad" 60 feet below)

Chasing the White Demon (extreme white water kyaking)

Soul Purpose (skiing and snowboarding)

Daughters of Everest - this one was my favorite and this links to the highlight of that film (when one of their team makes it to the top - they were the only team to summit Everest that year!)

...and others. (including one called "Heavy Fork" that was just a 12 year old crashing a lot on his freeride bike - I didn't like it - kinda set the wrong example of what freeriding is about. *shrug*)

Kinda wish I'd known about this film festival. I could have entered a version of my own Local Progression Freeride video. Oh well.

Baby from the sky! (update)

Wendy called the agency, and found out that the couple has decided to meet with a different adoptive family this afternoon. Kinda sucks, but that's just how it goes. Never know what sort of criteria the birth family is looking for - there's always some mysterious, random, odd sort of thing that draws them to one family versus another. If we're not called to be this baby's family, then there's always some other out there waiting for us.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers!

Baby from the sky!

As some of you may know, Wendy and I have been waiting as an adoptive family with Catholic Charities Pregnancy Support & Adoption Services in Portland since February 2004 last year.

Here's a snippet from an email I sent at that time last year:

Feb 19, 2004

Just finished our home study!

We're effectively in the adoption pool now! Agency
could call us any day...

It's less like being "expecting parents" than I
imagined since at any point from now until we are
picked by birthmother we could instantly become
parents - literally OVERNIGHT (or with a couple days).

*gulp*

We're really excited, and glad to be done with all the
administrivia to finally be ready to adopt!

Keep us and all birthmothers in your prayers!

Last night, that very call came! Yes, not the ideal, but we knew going into this that there was a possibility we might need to be ready for "a baby from the sky". Emily with Catholic Charities called us last night to let us know about a birth family that is interested in seeing our photo album and possibly meeting with us... The birth mother had a healthy baby girl on Saturday (7 lbs ? oz). (Lots of other details here about the birth family and baby, but that's just that - details - all that matters is a baby is here and needs a family). They may or may not choose us this afternoon, but if they do... we might be bringing home our baby girl from the hospital tonight!

Please pray for us, the birth family, and especially the brand-new addition to humanity that arrived on Saturday!

Progression at Blackrock freeride trails!

Went to Falls City for early morning ride today with friends (left from Salem around 6am which put us on the trail by 7am!) Had the gate key also since we planned to work a bit on the Basic Training area. Before we worked, we rode. Like MAD! I finally mustered the courage to drop off of the Granny's Kitchen "ski jump" drop for the first time! (pictured here). It's got a pretty big gap between drop and the landing so it's kinda scary. The hang time seems to last forever also... Seems like twice as long "air time" than anything I've dropped before. I was landing about half way down the tranny - right in the sweet spot - most of the time. It was smooth as butter... Took lots more pictures while on this ride too. Check out Freeride - Blackrock_20050423 for what I dumped to web photo album pages on my computer.

Tomorrow (Sunday) Wendy and Erika are riding in Salem Bicycle Club's Monster Cookie ride (about 60 mile ride from Salem up to Portland - Champoeg park). I'm planning to take more photos of their ride, and will post them to a web page like the one above. I plan to just ride my motorcycle (if the weather isn't too terrible). They're going to also ride the Watermelon and Peach century rides so they can earn the "road animal" award. Wish 'em luck!  Posted by Hello

Podcasting is a great way for professionals and individuals alike to create audio news files (podcasts) that people can download to their iPods or other portable media devices and listen to when they are away from their computers. Heck, some people even listen to these podcasts directly from their computers, no mp3 player needed!

ANNUNTIO VOBIS GAUDIUM MAGNUM HABEMUS PAPAM

Hey check it out, you can now email the new Pope! No, like, for real! If you click the link above, you'll go to the main news page for the Vatican, and on there is a "Greetings to the Holy Father" with the Pope Benedict XVI's email address: benedictxvi@vatican.va

I think I'll add the Pope's email address to my addressbook, just cuz I can. *chuckle*

Here's the home page for the Vatican. It's actually laid out very well. didn't realize that the Vatican has an entire "domain all unto itself"... .VA All countries have their own domain (.com is just generic for US business sites), but didn't know the Vatican also had a dedicated domain. Gallon House Bridge motorcycle trip... cuz the weather was great and Wendy doesn't have grad school work! We did an evening motorcycle ride tonight to a nearby covered bridge. Makes for a nice short ride destination, and a reason to play with my camera... Hey, there's a geocache hidden there too! (We'd already found that one last year though.) Firefox - web browser...

Get Firefox!
(it's free!)

"Next generation browser, currently under development, that simplifies and speeds up your browsing experience."

I've been using Firefox for years (since it was in early beta... back when it was called... and I practically had forgotten!.. "Phoenix". They had to change the name due to threat of letigation from the Phoenix BIOS chip maker).

Anyway, I'd highly highly recommend replacing Internet Explorer with Firefox so you get...

Tabbed browsing (have multiple web sites open in same window! CTRL-T opens a new tab - there's nothing better than being in two, three, or more places at once! ..all without cluttering up your desktop with more windows!)

Popup blocking

Privacy and Security

Smarter Search (Google search built into the tool bar)

Small "footprint" (doesn't take up a lot of space on your system)

Download manager

To install, just click the "Get Firefox" button and click Download. Then run the installer. Now, stop using that IE icon... and use Firefox when you want to browse the web! Remember, CTRL-T opens a new tab, so you can be in multiple places on the web at once!

History moment... Pope Benedict XVI...

Wikipedia: "Pope Benedict XVI"

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, officially in Latin Benedictus PP. XVI, born Joseph Alois Ratzinger (Latin: Iosephus Ratzinger), on April 16, 1927, was elected Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on April 19, 2005. As such, he is Bishop of Rome, rules Vatican City and leads the Roman Catholic Church including the Eastern Rite Churches in communion with the Holy See. He will be formally installed as pontiff during the Mass of Papal Installation on April 24, 2005.

Benedict is seen as a traditionalist - he is nicknamed "God's Rottweiler" because of his fierce defence of papal principles. He is a controversial choice. He is a critic of homosexuality and gay marriage and has denounced other Christian churches as deficient.

CatholicInsider.com and podcasting...

CatholicInsider.com

"Podcasting from the heart of the Catholic Church."

There's this priest from Holland who has a regularly broadcast program that goes out via the Internet, and this week he was visiting Rome (as many people are during this time of Pope John Paul II's funeral and the conclave of cardinals to elect a new Pope)... It's almost as good as being right there live and underground... bumping into people in St. Peter's square and getting a feel for what it's like.

What's cool is that this audio program is freely available for streaming or just grabbing the MP3 and listening to the broadcast on your media player whenever you have time.

Check out Wikipedia: "podcasting" for more detail about what podcasting is all about. If you've got an iPod (or similar MP3 player) then it makes it really easy to set up an ipodder program to grab whatever you want to listen to and take it with you to listen wherever/whenever you have time.

FYI - There's lots of podcasts out there, specific to many different topics. Anybody with an internet connection and a blog can put up a podcast for people to listen to. (Amazing, and yet, totally scary at the same time...)

Took the day off today to go help Jason Franz (of Fall Line Sports in Silverton) with his recently ODF approved "mountain bike only" freeride trails. Pictured here is Jason and Vince along with Jason's daughter overseeing the work progress. The day started out with SNOW(!?) then turned to rain then the fog came... and then it finally stopped raining (about the time we were done working for the day). Shellburg Falls is located on opposite side of Willamette valley from where Blackrock trails are. It's about the same amount of time to get to these trails from Salem, but during the spring/summer months Shellburg trails can be shuttled because ODF leaves the west gate open (accessible from Silver Falls highway). Modest Mouse... and Summer Nights concerts...

Modest Mouse added new tourdates this week. Guess where they are playing? Billings, MT at the Shrine Auditorium! May 30th. Tickets go on sale to public April 23rd.

This group is cool. They're one of my favorite bands right now. I "accidentally featured" a clip of one of their songs called "Lives" in my Local Progression Riders Video. It goes "...everyones afraid of their own lives..." (as camera panned past back of someone's truck during section of trail building footage...).

If we were in Billings... I'd be buying tickets April 23rd for sure! You can get tickets here or just check out info about Modest Mouse here.

snapshot from Summer Nights in Seattle

On the concert note... Erika and Hunter invited us up to go to some of the "Summer Nights" Music Fest concerts this summer up in Washington. We got tickets for a few concerts before they officially went on sale. Whoo hoo! We're going to Lyle Lovett in June and Aimee Mann in August, plus some other group but I don't remember right now. The venue is outdoors on south waterfront park of Lake Union (near Seattle). They usually have these concerts on Pier 62/63 in Seattle, but relocated this year due to construction/restoration of pier. We were in Seattle last year (or maybe it was the year before?) when they had these concerts going on... Looked like fun. Glad we're going this year!

Freelance photographer...

I like the sound of that! "Freelance"... "photographer"...

One of my pics got featured on a bike manufacturer's web site. Transition Bikes.

It's in their gallery here:
http://www.transitionbikes.com/Gallery.cfm?Cat=500

Look for Rider: "Jameson Watts", Location: "Falls City, Oregon".

Click the thumbnail - and you'll see the photo attributed to me. That cool or what?

I shot that photo with my Nikon D70 last weekend while at Blackrock... while working on drop zone jumps at Basic Training, we knocked off a bit early to "test" our newly built lines.

Crazy weekend...

On Friday night, we threw a last minute BBQ for freeride friends. Was fun. Kind of a spur of the moment sort of deal. Called up some people, invited 'em, and fired up the BBQ. That's so not like Wendy and I... but just seemed like the thing to do at the time. Everyone said it was fun and we should do it again sometime. It was interesting to hear girlfriends and wives comparing notes about what they thought about freeriding.

Saturday I spent out at Blackrock - working on trails and riding with the Basic Training build crew. It was a good day. I dropped off the new big drop about 10 times - landed each and every one just fine (except one when my foot slipped off the pedal - that got a bit exciting for a moment!) We started building the first big jump in the "bowl" of Basic Training, and I got to try it out first. It'll allow people to jump 3' or 30' - and the transition landing area will take care of them. It's gonna have a HUGE transition! We plan to build a 14' wooden landing area immediately after the jump, so if you clear the wooden and land on the dirt part of tranny - then you'll know for certain you can also easily clear the Granny's Kitchen road gap (a stunt further up the hill) - because it's about 14' to jump the road.

Took some pictures. I put them up to share with everyone here: http://joer.no-ip.info/webphotos/Freeride%20-%20Blackrock/index.html

On Sunday, Wendy and I went out to the coast. Been putting that off too long. Have been meaning to go for weeks. While we were there (in Lincoln City) we made reservations at a hotel on the beach for 4th of July weekend for when my parents are in town - planning to go see fireworks over the bay near Lincoln City and then stay the night. Good thing we planned ahead - the hotels are mostly all booked already for the 4th! And most require a 3 night stay minimum for holiday weekends, but the one we found had a gap between two reservations, so we got a room just for one night on the 4th of July! Lucky.

We also hunted for a couple of geocaches, just for something else to do while we were at the coast. I played around with taking photographs of seagulls and stuff in the tidepools. We took the dogs with us, and they enjoyed running around the beach and smelling stuff.

It was a good, full weekend.

Oh, and I'm sick. Stupid head cold thing. Sapping my energy, and now I'm loosing my voice too. It's like, I should use some personal time off or something... but I don't want to! (Planning on several trips up to Canada - for freeriding! - and a week back in Montana, so want to save my days...) We'll see I guess.

My wife is so cool...

Wendy started a blog too!

I put a link to it over on the menu bar. check it out!

GCN8J2 Riverfront Park Expedition...

Wendy and I placed a "micro cache" at the Riverfront Park last weekend. It was approved and is now available for people to hunt for. We based it on a couple of cache s we found at Gasworks up in Seattle with Wendy's sister. It's a crossword-scramble-math game along with being a geocache. check out the Riverfront Park Expedition cache page to see what I'm talking about.
